when its seething hot, the streets here stink. don’t go to chinatown AT ALL in the month of july….seafood water is thrown out onto melting pavements….its putrid and vomitous and you want to shower for walking through.
just read an interview with lupe in complex magazine - the only rapper with a backpack i’ll be checking for from now on is buckshot. this sort of crapola makes me break out the beanie siegel.
lupe on fashion
“I’ll wear Bape. But the Bape I wear is all black”
lupe on art
“I don’t like Takashi Murakami, Andy Warhol, Basquiat….I’m impressed by Damien Hirst”
“Banksy impresses me…Like the painting of a cat playing with a ball of yarn on one end of the city, and the yarn ball unwound through the entire city and when you got to the end, it was a little girl about to plug it into the wall. And it speaks of cruelty and how we ‘re entertained by cruelty.”
lupe on music
“The original (Unkle) was James Lavelle and DJ Shadow”
lupe on magazines
“(Monocle) It’s the only magazine I get that I don’t even read - I just go through it and look at the pictures. And there’s barely any pictures in there!”
MK- illie! Need more. That station changed my life- Kiss Fm used to play ish like Gary Bartz in the daytime… nowadays try that and you’ll have a job putting green stickers on shitty Jive 12’s at the Record and Tape Exchange faster than you can say ‘let’s go to the ad break’
Back in 86 if you wanted to hear any type of decent music on the radio you certainly wernt gonna hear it on Radio 1, or Capital. It was all about the Pirates. Kiss was set up in 1985 by Gordon mack and alongside LWR they were the 2 major players on the pirate scene. The rare groove scene was in full swing and its safe to say that Westwood and Trevor were defiantly doing there things, and holding down the warehouse parties and the clubs.
Boy its crazy to think that the station i dj on now which is a huge million pound business , used to be a pirate radio station which broadcasted in different locations every night out of peoples bedrooms and various other locations….and all for the love of music.
On this tape both dj’s are killing it with the rare groove selection…I left the adds in too, which are pure jokes.
Check out the classic Kiss line photo above, and props to my man Patrick Forge pictured whose still on the station 21 years later, still doing his thing!!! (check him out every Sunday nigh/Monday morning 1-3am)
i enjoyed most of dizzee’s records, but the calvin harris connection is a step too far. and the dance wiv me video reminds me of russ abbott’s ‘atmosphere’ in its lo-fi revelry.
